In Jeremiah 2:5, God asks an interesting question: “What fauld did your fathers find in me, that they strayed so far from me?” Obviously God had not failed them. He brought them out of Egypt through the wilderness into fertile land with many resources. I was thinking that the majority of us live in a land of abundant resources. Most of us live better than 99% of the rest of the world, yet we tend to stray from God.
As Jeremiah puts it, we have dug our own cisterns that cannot even hold water while we have rejected the “spring of living water.” We would rather rely on the work of our hands instead of relying on the provision of God. Does that sound familiar? We may not always realize it but it is surely true in my life…and maybe yours as well.
If so, let the conclusion to verse 5 be a wake up call to all of us: “They followed worthless idols and became worthless themselves.” Let that not describe us!
