Nanko stared at Jess in disbelief. It wasn’t possible. There was no way that God could forgive him. He raised his shackled hands, as if to remind her of who he was; of where they were at, He was in prison – and he deserved to be. He lived a life of violence and crime. Carjacking, robbery, and assault were just a few on a long list of transgressions. As his gaze met hers, she saw defiance, shame – and hope.
