“And He gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ…” Ephesians 4:11-12
Do you take for granted what you know about the Scriptures? Do you ever hesitate to share the Gospel with someone because you don’t think you will say the right thing, have the right answers, or even the right theological degree? As The Timothy Initiative trains church planters around the world we continually run into people that know little to nothing about the Bible, yet they are teaching, preaching and pastoring churches. There was even one man that we met who thought Paul and Barnabas were husband and wife!
However, as the Gospel and training is passed on to these “Timothys” in the faith (2 Tim. 2:2), they are being equipped and trained for the work of ministry so that they can, in turn, train others. We hear story after story of the lives that are changed and the joy that is found in a person being trained and taught to correctly understand the Bible. They are overjoyed as they continue to discover some of the most simple truths of God’s word and pass them along to others. Below is one such story of a student in Benin, Africa:
“I had the desire to work for God and I began this work long time ago. I thought I knew everything about the gospel but when I began the TTI training, I noticed that I knew nothing at all. After Book 1 and 2, I have another point of view of it all. I can now be sure of what I teach and preach to people now. I thank God because despite of the fact that I haven’t any school background, I understand very well the study of TTI Program as far as our teacher is very good in the local language. What made my Christians life hard before is the lack of understanding of the Scripture. After Book 1, I am proud to be a disciple of Jesus. I have the assurance of my salvation which I didn’t know before. I am free now and I can’t stop talking about Jesus and the Gospel of grace and the Finished Work. “
So maybe you are not a pastor, teacher, or had any formal training–but what do you know? What can you share with someone? Chances are, if you have grown up in church or been a part of a church for any amount of time you know more than most people in the world. Don’t be shy. Be confident that Jesus is living through you and take what you know and use it to evangelize, disciple, and equip the saints (other believers) for the work of ministry. Please continue to pray for TTI and for students like the one above that are also being equipped for the work of ministry.
